Surgery 1
Description
Surgery 1 is a one-year rotation in general surgery that focuses on the basic surgical principles and
its application to the perioperative care of a surgical patient. This will include principles of systemic
inflammation, surgical nutrition, and metabolism, fluids, and electrolytes, shock, and hemostasis, wound
healing, surgical infections and antimicrobial therapy, trauma and burns, surgical oncology and genomics,
patient safety, minimally invasive surgery, and physiologic monitoring of a surgical patient. Also ethics,
professionalism and leadership in surgery will be discussed.
